Everybody Knows

From two-time Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi (A Separation, The Salesman), Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem star in a dark ‘whodunnit’ thriller of familial ties that pulls no punches. Laura (Cruz), a Spanish woman who has been living in Buenos Aires, returns to her family’s estate outside Madrid for her sister’s wedding with her two children in tow. But her trip home is about to be thrown into chaos, when Laura’s headstrong teenage daughter is kidnapped in the middle of the night’s celebrations. Desperate for any help in discovering her daughter’s whereabouts, Laura reaches out to Paco (Bardem), an old flame who is now a successful winemaker on land purchased from Laura’s father. “Everybody knows” that Laura broke Paco’s heart, but as demands from the kidnappers appear, what else about this secretive and destructive family does “everybody” know? The opening night film at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, Farhadi’s latest is a work of masterful melodrama, unravelling a family’s decades of rancour, resentment and sins until there is nowhere to hide.
