A mother and father receive the worst possible news about their soldier son in the latest film from Samuel Maoz (Lebanon), an award-winning drama that has also stirred up controversy in its native Israel. When Michael and Dafna Feldman (Lior Ashkenazi and Sarah Adler) receive a knock on the door that informs them of the death of their son Jonathan (Yonatan Shiray), their lives instantly collapse. We are taken to the desolate outpost where Jonathan was stationed and witness his last days, and the realities and contradictions of his position. Constructed as a metaphorical triptych, FOXTROT wrestles with the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, zeroing in on both the experiences of the soldiers on the frontline, which tend towards boredom, farce and eerie banality, and the blinkered existence of Israeli citizens for whom an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality is the norm. Dreamlike yet unsettlingly powerful, FOXTROT is a poetic, complex film that will provoke conversation. Hebrew language, English subtitles
